Many projects begin not as new construction, but as renovations or rehabilitations of existing buildings. While only a portion of these qualify as “historic,” nearly all present challenges related to the condition, performance, and long-term viability of their existing windows. This session examines how architects can evaluate whether windows should be preserved, repaired, upgraded, or replaced—and how to determine the most effective solution based on structural performance, daylighting, natural ventilation, noise control, energy efficiency, cost, and code compliance. Participants will also explore the National Park Service guidelines for historic window rehabilitation and how thoughtful window strategies can support sustainable building upgrades, modernization efforts, and long-term preservation goals. The session equips attendees with a decision-making framework they can apply directly in practice to guide clients toward informed, defensible solutions.
