9 | A Higher Level of Inclusive PlayA Higher Level of Inclusive PlaySponsored by: American Society of Landscape Architects - WV Chapter Presented by: Brett Hooper, Sparks@PlayThe playground should be a place for laughter, friends and fun, for all. Traditional playgrounds focus on accessible-element play count and developmentally appropriate activities; but miss the mark when it comes to supporting a wide range of abilities. Per the CDC, one in 36 children has autism resulting in challenges interpreting sensory messages, engaging in play and social interaction. All children learn through their senses. Evidence-based research shows sensory-rich play environments with appropriate levels of challenge, a variety of activities to promote choice, develop functional skills, imaginary play and social skills provide a higher level of inclusive play for all. 12 | The Role of Experts in Litigation – AND HOW YOU COULD BE ONEThe Role of Experts in Litigation – AND HOW YOU COULD BE ONESponsored by: Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) Presented by: Bowles Rice Partners Aaron Boone, Esq. and Fazal Shere, Esq.Experts play a crucial role in litigation matters – especially in construction litigation. Construction is a field that is replete with professionals and their associated expertise, be it architects, engineers (from civil to structural to others), surveyors, soil and geotechnical analysts, and contractors. There is also often finger-pointing in construction litigation – between different role players in the process – and that requires experts to define who consummated their role with professional competence and who did not. In this presentation, attendees will review the intricate and convoluted process involved in selecting experts for construction litigation – from research, surveys, interviews, due diligence, analysis, report drafting, and finally preparation for depositions, trial, or mediation. In analyzing this whole process, you – as a professional – will also understand if you can be a potential expert, and what you could do to market yourself as one. 26 | Hydraulic Odor & Corrosion Control in Sewer DropsHydraulic Odor & Corrosion Control in Sewer DropsSponsored by: West Virginia Utility Contractors Association (WVUCA) Presented by: Kerry Koressel, IPEX Group of CompaniesIn this presentation, participants will learn how to control hydraulic odor by utilizing the Vortex Flow Insert. The system is a drop structure insert for odor and corrosion control in sanitary sewers that does not require any chemicals, has no moving parts or mechanical devices, and uses the energy of the falling sewage to reduce H2S and add dissolved oxygen to the sewage. This is done by increasing the flow velocity so that the sewage spirals down the Vortex drop shaft. As it spirals down it creates a negative air column that pulls down the odors and H2S and re-entrains them back into the sewage. At the same time, the oxygen being pulled down is entrained as dissolved oxygen (tiny bubbles) to neutralize the H2S. Participants will learn how the flow energy is dissipated, leaving the structure in a more tranquil manner. Long Live Cursive!Sponsored by: Fairmont State University Surveying and Geomatics Program Presented by: Don Teter, Assistant Professor of Surveying and Geomatics, FSUPundits often declare that reading cursive is a worthless skill, becoming more archaic by the day. Some of us – those who must research old cursive documents – do not agree. This group includes retracement surveyors, historians, and anyone who wants to truly go to the source. Reading old cursive does not need to be as daunting as some believe. It is not a foreign language, and as with any other surveying task, study and practice are the keys. 34 | WHAT HAPPENS UPSTREAM, MATTERS DOWNSTREAM – Are we asking the right questions to prevent sediment loss?WHAT HAPPENS UPSTREAM, MATTERS DOWNSTREAM – Are we asking the right questions to prevent sediment loss?Sponsored by: Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) Presented by: Keith Potter, Silt SaverGeorgia, like many states and municipalities, has very detailed checklists that must be completed as part of the design, review, and approval processes for erosion and sediment control plans. As an example, the checklist for common developments in Georgia contains 54 questions that must be addressed before a plan document can be submitted to the state or local issuing authority for review and approval. Yet the frequency of failures associated with the construction of residential developments resulting in sediment loss to receiving streams continues to be pervasive. This begs one to think; are we asking the right questions? This presentation will share a simplified case study of a project that experienced significant sediment loss and ask different questions. A major emphasis will be on the application of the International Erosion Control Association Silt Fence Design Guide. The presentation will share ideas about the use of products that have demonstrated different performances. 41 | Everything Is Connected and Nothing Stays Where We Put It – Even Rock ChecksEverything Is Connected and Nothing Stays Where We Put It – Even Rock ChecksSponsored by: Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) Presented by: Keith Potter, Silt SaverFor many years rock check dams have been the ultimate solution to reducing the velocity of stormwater runoff on construction sites. Maintaining the velocity of runoff in channels below erosive force is important to reduce sediment transport, control turbid discharge, and provide for stabilization of the grade as channels are installed. While silt fence has long been prohibited from being installed in concentrated flow, various methods such as straw bales and wattles have been tried with various levels of success. Inevitably when everything else fails, rock is the ultimate solution. For some linear projects like highway renovation projects the use of stone check dams adjacent to active roadways is not allowed due to roadside safety concerns. Using rock to construct check dams presents some additional challenges. This seminar will review the challenges contractors may face and will follow a transportation project in Georgia where fabric checks were installed in a roadside ditch. The presenter will share information about the site, the installation/removal process, and the performance of the system. 45 | When the Engineer is Faced with Notifying Occupants to VacateWhen the Engineer is Faced with Notifying Occupants to VacateSponsored by: National Society of Professional Engineers of West Virginia (NSPE-WV) Presented by: Gregory L. Boso, PE, DFE, Boso Forensics PLLCHolding the obligation to protect life, safety, and welfare, the forensic engineer was required to notify the homeowner to vacate her new dream home constructed in an active landslide. The forensic engineering evaluation of a four-year-old home revealed extensive damages caused by active soil mass flow in glacial lake deposit soils and a natural spring that imposed excessive hydrostatic pressure on the front foundation wall. The homeowner remained in the home for nearly three years prior to the investigation while insurers and their engineers argued over coverage and repairs. This case study presentation describes the structural analysis that revealed the probability of collapse threatening the safety and welfare of occupants and the compelling necessity and ethical obligation to notify the homeowner of grave peril to the occupants and their need to vacate and abandon the premises. After completing this session, participants will be able to: Understand the ethical obligations and duties of the professional engineer; discuss the trouble arising when tunnel vision develops; evaluate possibilities and probabilities; know the protocol for notifying the threatened and other parties of interest of impending peril; and describe where the focus of the engineer should be when faced with challenging problems. 48 | Keep Sewers SexyKeep Sewers SexySponsored by: International Right of Way Association (IRWA) Presented by: Jenelle Armstrong, PE, PMP, Brown & CaldwellSewers are the building blocks of healthy communities and what is sexier than that! There are three steps to keeping sewers sexy: 1) Intelligent planning; 2) efficient design; and 3) effective operation and maintenance. In this case, “Sewers” refer to the entire system from waste source to clean water. Thus, planning includes significantly more than the basic residential sanitary sewer pipe. The entire sanitary sewer system includes both the traditional infrastructure (plumbing fixtures, collection piping, pumping stations, and treatment facilities) and the people who benefit from these systems. This presentation takes a holistic approach to keeping our communities healthy through functional sewer systems. It includes concepts and techniques she has learned over 25 years of engineering sanitary sewer systems especially those things learned “the hard way” such as dealing with lack of available space for new facilities, last-minute design changes, the unfortunate popularization of “flushable” wipes, and ever-increasing regulatory requirements. Additionally, design concepts from historic bricks to modern plastic will be evaluated in the quest to keep sewers sexy. 55 | Demolition of the I-64 Truss over the Kanawha River – Nitro, WVDemolition of the I-64 Truss over the Kanawha River – Nitro, WVSponsored by: West Virginia Construction & Design EXPO Presented by: Shawn Tunstall and Jarid Antonio (Tunstall Engineering Group), Tom Hesmond (Brayman Construction Corporation), Jeff Slezak (Trumbull Corporation)This presentation will review the demolition of the I-64 truss over the Kanawha River. The Nitro River Bridge consisted of a 3-span through truss (375’, 562.5’, 375’) including a 250’ pin and hanger drop-in section in span 2. Demolition was accomplished by slabbing the bridge, removing stringers, strand jacking the 250’ drop-in section down onto barges, and cutting/picking pieces of the remaining truss while supported by falsework towers. Another unique aspect of the demolition was demolishing a 320’ section of truss over the pier by utilizing a ‘balanced cantilever’ approach which involved designing pier brackets to keep the structure stable while removing truss sections from the cantilever ends. All of these steps required analysis of the truss and falsework to ensure adequate strength and stability, as well as consideration for barge and crane stability. Staged analysis was utilized to estimate the existing truss forces, and preloading was applied to minimize the existing member forces prior to cutting steel members. This presentation will review the truss demolition, including the strand jacking and balanced cantilever components. 61 | Effective Soft Armor Alternatives to Rock For Permanent Erosion ControlEffective Soft Armor Alternatives to Rock For Permanent Erosion ControlSponsored by: American Society of Landscape Architects - WV Chapter Presented by: Tim Lancaster, GrassWorx, LLCToday’s more frequent, high intensity storm events are subjecting drainage channels, riverbanks, and shorelines to greater flow discharges and erosive forces than ever before. Historically, conventional stitched and woven turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) have proven to be effective vegetative “soft armor” alternatives to environmentally unfriendly “hard armor” rock and concrete materials for stabilizing some of these areas. If a large storm event occurs before vegetation is fully established, which is becoming increasingly more likely with climate change, conventional TRMs are prone to erosion failure. This presentation discusses the development of a new category of permanent erosion control products known as Hybrid-Turf Instant Armoring Mats, which were specifically developed to meet the erosion challenges of more severe weather. These products offer substantially increased pre-vegetated erosion protection for a reduced risk of failure prior to vegetation establishment, therefore extending the use of natural vegetation in place of hard armor in more high flow applications.
